Diamond State Logs First Win

April 19, 2010 - The Diamond State BBBC’s first road venture proved fruitful yesterday, as the the club logged its first win of the young season.  After suffering a tough defeat in the first game by a score of 28-5 at the hands of the Potomac BBC, the Delaware nine rebounded with exceptional defense and timely hitting in the second game to defeat the home club by a tally of 8-4 at chilly, overcast Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, MD.

Game 1: Potomac - 28, DSBBC – 5 (1864 Rules)

In Game 1 of the double-header, Diamond State appeared sluggish from the arduous carriage ride to the National Capital Area.  The Potomac Nine jumped all over them from the start and never looked back, scoring runs in all but one of the nine inning contest.  Diamond State managed 15 hits as a team but was unable to string anything together to score any runs of significance.  The Potomac hitters continued to “hit ‘em where they ain’t” for the entirety of the contest.  In the losing effort, Charlie ‘House’ Kashner and Jeff ‘Swampy’ Kabacinski each contributed three hits each.

Game 2: DSBBC –  8, Potomac - 4 (1864 Rules)

Looking to do what they haven’t done in recent history, the Diamond States put the misery of Fame 1 behind them and logged a come back win in the second game.  Potomac picked up immediately where they left off scoring two runs in the first inning.  Diamond State answered in the first three innings and led the contest 5-2 through four innings.  Potomac tried to muster up a rally in the final three innings, but all their hits were used up in the first game as they could only push two more runs across the plate.  Diamond State added three insurance runs in the final innings to make the final tally 8-4.  Dan ‘Mini’ Minutola pitched the complete game to pick up the first victory of his career and the first DSBBC victory of the season.  Ken ‘Buzzsaw’ Bonsall had the hot bat in Game 2 picking up two hits.  ‘House’ had one hit but made it a memorable one, with a moon shot launched into the pond in left field for a ground rule triple.

Diamond State’s record now stands at 1-3, as the prepare to travel to Elks Landing in Elkton, MD this Saturday to participate in The Chopper Tournament.  In the day’s first match, the Blue and Black will face the newly formed Eureka Base Ball Club of Bohemia (Chesapeake City, MD) at 11:00 a.m., followed by a match against the Frosty Sons of Thunder BBC (Somerset, PA) at 1:00 p.m.
