Chopped in Elkton

April 25, 2010 – The Diamond Base Ball Club lost two tough matches on Saturday at the Chopper Tournament held at historic Elk Landing in Elkton, Maryland.

In the first match,  the Delaware nine challenged the newly formed Eureka BBC of Bohemia (Chesapeake City, MD).  The new-comers proved to be more than a squad of muffins, as they plated 7 runs in the first two innings.  The boys in the blue and black battled back, as they are known to do, and took over the lead in the 6th inning by a talley of 10-9.  A big rally in the 7th inning put Diamond State up 15-9, but the Eurekas were not finished with rallies of their own.  Bohemia’s 4 runs scored in the 8th to cut the lead to 15-13 and a furious 9th inning saw them talley 3 more runs to go ahead, 16-15.  Diamond State had last at-bat in the game, but some superb fielding found them unable to plate any runs, leaving the tying run at third base.

Cap Boulden, Stones Benningfield and One Finger Brown led the offensive charge for Diamond State with three hits apiece.

In the day’s second match, the Delaware nine faced off against the Frosty Sons of Thunder BBC (Somerset, PA) for the first time.  The Frosty Sons put the chill on Diamond State bats limiting them to 11 hits.  Outstanding play in the field took away what appeared to be base hits off the bat.

Already weary from losing a close contest in game 1, the Blue and Black never threatened in this match, as the Frosty Sons of Thunder rolled to an easy 13-3 victory.

El Jefe Medkeff, One Finger Brown, Stones Benningfield, and Swampy Kabacinski each had two hits apiece and eight of the eleven team hits.

Diamond State eagerly anticipates a rematch of this game at the Gettysburg 19th Century Base Ball Tournament in mid-July.
