Diamond State downs Athletic
May 3, 2010 – It only took 145 years but the Diamond State Base Ball Club finally got its chance to settle an old score with its friendly foe from Philadelphia, the Athletic Base Ball Club. The boys in the Blue and Black saddled up their horses and hitched up their carriages for the journey to beautiful Fairmount Park in the shadow of the Smith Civil War Memorial with Diamond State prevailing by a wide 22-3 tally. The last Diamond State-Athletic match took place on October 28, 1865 and resulted in a 104-7 whitewashing by the Philadelphians.
Opening up their first season as a recreated club on their home field, the Athletics put up quite a fight through fiving innings with the score DSBBC taking a 7-1 lead. However, a big 11-run 6th inning saw the Diamond Staters put this game out of reach and spoil Philadelphia’s home opener. Diamond State continued to score runs and limit the Athletic’s opportunities to score to close out the game with a final tally of 22-3.
Dan ‘Mini’ Minutola lead the way with 6 hits and hurled a terrific game to pick up his and the club’s second win of the season. Frank ‘Flying Dutchman’ Brevoort, Scott ‘Stretch’ Rawding, and Garrett ‘Steady’ Perdick each chipped in 5 hits apiece to pace the Blue and Black’s offense.
The Delaware nine’s record for the season is now 2-5. Their next adversary is the Excelsior BBC of Arundel in a match to be played on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Glen Burnie, MD at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 16.
