Thriller at McMillan
June 21, 2010 - Diamond State Base Ball Club hitched up their wagons and mosied down to the cozy confines of McMillan Farm in Rising Sun, Maryland yesterday to tackle the might Eclipse BBC of Elkton in what is increasingly becoming a more competitive rivalry. The only thing hotter than the action on the field this day was the mercury with temperatures soaring into the 90’s for the second straight week.
Even working with a skeleton crew of players, the Blue and Black showed that they were willing combatants this day as they tallied three aces in the top of the first inning to set the tone for the day. Not to be outdone, the Eclipse battled back plating five tallies with four coming on a grand slam home run by Jon ‘Killer’ Kilpatrick.
The game was back and forth the entire contest with neither side able to get a comfortable lead. In the sixth frame, Diamond State scored four runs to take a 12-10 lead, only to see Elkton bounce back to a 13-12 advantage after their half of the inning.
The Delaware nine made Elkton sweat a little more in the last inning, scoring two to cut the lead to three. With the bases loaded, Diamond State was unable to plate any more runs and the Marylanders held on to preserve a 17-14 victory. Diamond State’s record fell to 6-9 for the season.
Garrett ‘Steady’ Perdick and Jeff ‘Swampy’ Kabacinski led the offensive charge for the Blue and Black by contributing five hits each. Ken ‘Buzzsaw’ Bonsall and Jake ‘Snake’ Bockman each added four hits to the Delaware offensive assault.
Diamond State will next travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania the weekend of July 17 and 18 to participate in the Gettysburg 19th Century Base Ball Tournament, taking on the likes of the Somerset Frosty Sons of Thunder, the Pittsburgh Franklins BBC, and the Flemington Neshanock BBC.
