DSBBC Drops Pair

April 12, 2010 – The Diamond State BBC opened the 2010 season losing two close games versus the solid Resolute BBC of Elizabeth (NJ) yesterday at sunny, windswept Fort DuPont ball field in Delaware City.

The Resolute nine mounted a rally in the final frame of the day’s first game to overcome the home club by a tally of 13-12.  The Blue and Black came up just short 16-14  in the second game of the day.

Diamond State was led on the day by Dan ‘Mini’ Minutola, making his first ever appearance for the Delaware nine.  Mini expertly showed his skills with the willow, hitting a monsterous 7-10 and pitching two complete games.  First sacker Scott ‘Stretch’ Rawding and centerfielder Ken ‘Buzzsaw’ Bonsall chipped in with two fine hitting performances (each 6-8), as did assistant captain Garrett ‘Steady’ Perdick (6-9) and leftfielder Frank ‘Flying Dutchman’ Brevoort (6-10).

Game 1: Resolute BBC - 13, DSBBC – 12 (1864 Rules)

Diamond State picked up where they left off last year and their bats were much hotter than the mercury.  After three innings the DSBBC was up 5-4 but the Resolutes were true to their name and roared back to take a 8-5 lead into the sixth inning.  In the sixth inning, both teams plated three runs to head into the final inning with the Resolute up, 11-8.  Diamond State pushed across 4 runs to take a 12-11 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but timely hits by the Resolute allowed them to escape the first game with a 13-12 victory.  ‘Stretch’ was the big bat in game 1 going 4 for 4, with Earl ‘Stones’ Benningfield, ‘Dutch’ and ‘Mini’ each chipping in 3 hits.  Huzzah to Mini pitching his first game ever and giving DSBBC a great opportunity for a win!

Game 2: Resolute BBC - 16, DSBBC – 14 (1866 Rules)

Looking to put the heartbreak of game 1 behind them, the Diamond States came roaring out of the gates again in Game 2, scoring 12 runs in the first 4 innings to 9 for the Resolute.  As the Resolute bats begun to warm up, the Diamond States’ were cooling off, with the boys from Elizabeth taking a 16-12 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Diamond States were not finished and the top of the order did an excellent job of getting on base and getting into scoring position quickly.  DSBBC was able to plate two runs and with two runners on base, unfortunately the Resolutes were able to play some superb defense and quell the rally.  ‘Steady’, ’Buzzsaw’ and ‘Mini’ lead the offensive attack with 4 hits apiece in Game 2.

The club’s next match takes them to Gaithersburg, MD on Sunday, April 18 to face adversary the Potomac BBC.
